Booming Boxster Cup

Booming Boxster Cup

Porsche Club Motorsport’s Boxster Cup is for Porsche Boxsters from 1999 to 2004 converted for racing, and provides an ideal introduction to circuit racing in a controlled and relatively low-cost environment. With almost 20 entries the field this coming season features returning regulars as well as a swathe of newcomers to provide a great mix of racers.

The cars are identical with just small changes in minimum weight to reflect the power advantage of the later Boxsters in the field. All cars run on a treaded Pirelli tyre, and with strict rules over how many races a set of tyres has to be used for, costs are kept as low as possible. This provides close racing and great learning curve for new drivers, and last year’s champion Richard Forber went from rookie to race winner to champion in his first season, and has now stepped up to the Porsche Club Championship.

Mike Thompson was a regular podium visitor in recent seasons and returns for 2022, while Pete Evans and Stephen Shore were also on the pace in 2021, Evans in his first season of racing. Joining Evans on the grid will be his partner Faye Noble-Evans, who made her race debut in a one-off outing at Brands Hatch last season and is now back for more.

Noble-Evans on the grid means that Sarah Thomson is no longer the sole female racer, and the Scottish youngster showed her pace in the final rounds of 2021 once a long-standing throttle issue finally let her unlock the pace of her Boxster. Simon Ruffell-Ward is another with previous Boxster Cup experience, while Scott Adams also took in some races last season.

Vikram Sudera made his series debut last season in a car run by Bolton Porsche specialists Unique, and he is joined on the grid by company co-founder Darren King, making his race debut after several seasons of preparing race cars.

The regulars are joined by a host of newcomers this season, and part of the excitement of the season ahead will be seeing these drivers gain valuable experience in the early races while hoping to emulate Forber’s successful 2021 season and covert that hard-gained knowledge to race wins.

The field have two 25-minute races at each of the seven race meetings this season, and will share the track with the 911 Challenge runners, with the exceptions of the rounds on the Silverstone and Brands Hatch Grand Prix layouts where the Boxsters's will join the Porsche Club Championship runners for one of the biggest grids of Porsches to be seen in 2022.
